Job SPECIFICATIONS

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field required; advanced degree in a related field, MBA and/or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years related experience in a large, complex organization, preferably in a nonprofit human services or healthcare agency or a related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles as relevant to nonprofit entities.
  • Knowledge of internal control systems used for general accounting principles and specialized nonprofit industry accounting practices and procedures.
  • Deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. 
  • Collaborative working style with demonstrated ability to work with colleagues to balance program and administrative concerns and perspectives in fashioning solutions.
  • Expertise in publicly funded health care and/or human services programs.
  • Acumen in maintaining accurate financial records and preparing clear and accurate reports for informational, auditing, and operational use.
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to interact effectively with the senior management team, Board members,  program staff, and external stakeholders, including funders.

Other Information:

The Chief Financial Officer will be a member of the Executive Cabinet, the senior leaders in the organization reporting directly to the CEO.  Travel is required as necessary to attend SCO Family of Services program and funding agencies’ meetings.


Projected salary range is:  $250K TO $300k

Background: 
SCO Family of Services (“SCO”) has been providing vital social services for over 125 years and is now one of the largest not-for-profit human services agencies in New York State.  SCO’s mission is to care for those most at risk, focusing on community-based preventive services, residential programs for children and adults with special needs, foster care, and adoption.  More than 55,000 children, families, and adults with special needs receive care and support at 120 locations throughout Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island.  SCO’s current budget is approximately $270 million and supports more than eighty programs serving its clients.  Its revenue is derived from multiple sources, including Medicare and Medicaid, government grants and contracts, and other restricted and nonrestricted funds. 
     

 

The Position: 
SCO is seeking a smart, strategic, highly skilled, energetic, and experienced financial executive who has proven leadership in significant management positions to become its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Reporting directly to the President & CEO (“CEO”), the CFO will be responsible for all financial management activities, including budgeting and financial planning, and will provide counsel and advice to the executive staff and the Board on all fiscal matters.  

 

The CFO will oversee and implement financial policies and plans for SCO and will provide overall management and direction for the accounting, budgeting, treasury (including banking relationships), grant review, purchasing, payroll, and tax reporting functions.   The CFO will also be able to think strategically about SCO’s financial health and the fiscal issues related to the changing environment faced by nonprofits in the housing, human services, and health care arenas, and be a trusted leader and thought partner to the CEO and the Board.

 

The successful candidate must be able to work closely with the CEO, the Board and staff and fit into the organization’s culture. They will be highly collaborative and have the ability to build cohesion and coordination among a diverse team working on a wide range of projects across multiple functions and locations, addressing and solving problems as they arise. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, a hands-on management style, have an ability to listen and be inclusive of ideas.  

 

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Provides overall direction in financial activities, including fiscal and management controls, to monitor and control cost and ensure optimum utilization of monetary resources within established guidelines.
  • Assures that the Finance Department provides timely, accurate accounting, payroll distribution, financial reporting, contracts, and grants management.
  • Provides financial and operational advice, recommendations and guidance to SCO’s program and administrative departments in ways that make optimal use of the agency resources.  
  • Works with members of executive leadership team to ensure maximum participation by program staff in the budget development and implementation process.  Monitors organization performance against budget and proactively recommends required actions to control spending.
  • Provides the CEO with financial information to be used in development and implementing the strategic goals and objectives of SCO Family of Services.
  • Assures that all policies and practices are applied in a manner to provide protection to agency assets and liabilities and to ensure that all federal, state and system guidelines are met.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures in the various areas of responsibility to ensure that the goals and objectives of SCO Family of Services are attained.
  • Responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Liaises with the Board of Directors and reports and interprets financial information to the Finance, Investment, and Insurance Committees; serves as a resource for interpreting Board-level requirements as mandated by the federal government.
  • Role may entail overseeing other administrative functions, in addition to financial management, as alignment of need and qualifications permit.
